Initiation Mechanisms of Ewing’s sarcoma: signaling and cell spreading

Cancer Research Foundation to promote collaboration in research

The Maria Garcia Estrada Foundation signed last October in Salamanca his fourth line of research in the fight against sarcoma.

The project, led by researcher Dr. Enrique de Alava and entitled: “Mechanisms of Ewing’s sarcoma initiation: signaling and cell spreading,” will last three years, so its completion is October 2011.

The project was approved with a budget of ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED NINETY EUROS (100,390.00 Euros), broken in three annual payments of € 33,463.33..

The group has since 2007 quality certification (ISO 9001:2000) for research projects in molecular pathology of sarcomas and other tumors. One of the objectives of the quality program is to promote training of researchers

RESEARCHER

Enrique de Alava

Graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Navarra in 1988. Specialist in Pathology in 1993 after doing his residency at the University Clinic of Navarra. Doctor of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Navarra in 1993. Post-doctoral training in the Department of Pathology, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York (1994-1996) thanks to a Fulbright postdoctoral fellowship.

In 2003 he opposed a position of Research Scientist of CSIC and joined the Cancer Research Center of Salamanca as Principal Investigator of the Laboratory of Molecular Pathology and as coordinator of the Tumor Bank of the Centre.

At the present he belongs to the national coordination team program Tumour Bank Network of Cancer Health Institute Carlos III – (RTICC). He´s the Scientific Subdirector of the  National DNA Bank, whose organization coordinates the node of oncological diseases. He chairs the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Society of Pathology.

His research topic is the molecular pathology of sarcomas, for which it has competitive funding from the European Commission (Network of Excellence EuroBoNet), the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Ramon Areces Foundation and the Fundación Marcelino Botin. He is coordinator of the working group on biology in the European Ewing tumor EuroBoNet a musculoskeletal tumor of childhood and adolescence, as well as the work platform in proteomics of sarcomas. His research interests include the search and validation of new therapeutic targets, mechanisms of sarcomagenesis, and validation of new diagnostic developments applicable in the area of the hospital routine.

In June 2007, he obtained the Permit to Associate Professor in the subject area of Pathology. He directs a doctoral course on Molecular Pathology of sarcomas at the University of Salamanca.

PROJECT ASSUMPTIONS

Transfection of mesenchymal stem cells with EWS-FLI1, the gene fusion characteristic of Ewing sarcoma (SE) is not sufficient to induce a full tumorigenicity. There must be other factors that act in a prior or subsequent to the presence of translocations in cells of origin, and explain the onset of SE. It is possible that these factors are also related to determining the resistance of some SE to conventional therapies.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

  1. Study of molecular events leading to translocation in Ewing sarcoma..
  2. Characterization of the lines of human mesenchymal stem cells of donor / patient, transfected with an inducible translocation model.
  3. Identification of stem cells from ES propagators and their characteristic markers.

REPORTS

The fourth research line signed by Maria Garcia-Estrada Foundation in November 2008, began in March 2009 with the hiring of the investigator Daniel Garcia Dominguez, responsible for technical research.

The research line is in charge of Principal Investigator Dr. Enrique de Alava, under the name “Mechanisms of Ewing’s sarcoma initiation: signaling and cell spreading”.

The Maria Garcia-Estrada Foundation has received the first scientific report of the investigation for the first year.
